Political post-notes: Rand Paul, push polls

Yikes, it’s been a while. I’ve been focusing on working on long pieces and they haven’t been going well so here are some quick hits in terms of politics (say it out loud… it sounds much better).

Rand Paul says he is running for re-election to the senate

On the surface this isn’t a surprise at all — BUT according to outsidethebeltway.com “Paul faces something of a dilemma in that Kentucky law forbids him from both running for re-election and running for President on the same ballot and also requires him to make a decision regarding which race to pursue by some time in January 2016.”

So does this completely rule out a Presidential run by the libertarian-leaning Republican? No, but it might make staying in the race as long as his father used to more challenging. It may make sense for Paul to not run in 2016 and plan for a spectacular run in 2020 but that’s pure speculation… you know what they say — Hienz’s sight is best in 2020.

Is it a push poll?

This is a stupid controversy that I didn’t really want to post on but it’s gained traction (I really didn’t think it would).

I reject the idea that it isn’t a push poll because they didn’t contact enough people, that’s bull shit (and I don’t care what dictionary is peddling it).

The freedictionary.com definition is: “a seemingly unbiased telephone survey that is actually conducted by supporters of a particular candidate and disseminates negative information about an opponent.”

So it can only be telephone surveys? Please. My definition would be if the objective of the poll is to sway and not conduct research. (Side note: I don’t see anything wrong with a push poll and think that they are used fairly frequently, especially in local elections. If you get a phone call from a candidate asking you to vote form them [and I have] then why can’t they be more sly?)

The winning Weiner

Oh the dick jokes. If only he was Richard “Dick” Weiner and not Anthony Weiner… but then the New York tabloids would explode.

Ugh, I don’t want to write about this story.

Weiner looking at for (wait, is that even any better?) interns

He’s looking for un-paid social media interns… give him a new image online — since we all know the old one. Here is my free social media tip for the Weiner lovers, guys on the Weinermobile — stop taking pictures of your dick. I consider that the public service announcement section of this post.

Bob Dole: GOP sucks

Wait, I wasn’t aware that Bob Dole was still around and being … well, Bob Dole.

He said that he wouldn’t be welcomed in the Grand Old Party and neither would Nixon (because he had ideas) [PS: I’m pretty sure the Republicans would now be thrilled if Nixon wasn’t part of their history] and Ronald Reagan.

This isn’t exactly a newsflash, parties change over time. Dole was a party man through-and-through as Senate Minority and Majority leader, chairman of the RNC and VP. He was always the guy who had the credentials (TWO purple hearts, Bronze Star, Methodist, rags-to-riches and athletic) but didn’t have the personality to be a candidate.

Clever Washington Post Chris Cillizza and Sean Sullivan column has an interesting take, but I think this is all for nothing.

Might have more later but want to get back on the blogging horse
