Searching for ideas is like fishing

I was trying to think about what I was going to post today and realized that the few posts that I’m working on could really benefit from a little more research or another look.

For inspiration I tend to read blogs/the news, watch TV (if you read or hang out with me enough then you know what shows I watch almost every day) and read comics.

Web comics — like XKCD — are great, thought provoking and entertaining.

So today I got an idea for a short post from the comic The Oatmeal

I thought about the search of ideas as fishing. You don’t know what you are going to catch but you can be reasonably assured that you can’t catch every single fish (although I think this was a topic we talked about in Differential Equations in college). It is very difficult to force one particular fish to take your bait (although you can use specific bait for different fish) and you may get something completely unexpected.

Some ideas you have to throw back and some are keepers: today is a day for cultivating the keepers and taking a picture with a tiny fish.
